“The Harrisburg Ten” is admitted to Penn State

May 29, 1968

Ten Black high school seniors from Harrisburg were accepted for admission into Penn State, even though they did not meet the normal academic requirements. “The Harrisburg Ten” was part of Youth for Advancement of Black Students (YABS), led by David Patterson. Patterson believed that determination was an important predictor of college success for poor Black students. The following year the University established the Educational Opportunity Program.
