Black Power conference is held on campus

SURE sponsored a four-day Black Power conference on campus. The purpose was not only to educate Blacks on Black Power, but to also educate whites on their role in the movement. On the first night of the conference, the one “Blacks only” meeting caused small demonstrations, public arguments, and editorial scorn. SURE President John Warner defended the meeting by saying that “Black Power is not a white thing.”
